Statement on Predicted Rain, Thunderstorms

NOTE: The following is a statement from Kim Masland, Minister of Emergency Management.

Nova Scotia is expected to receive a significant amount of rainfall and thunderstorms starting early Wednesday, July 22, and continuing late into Thursday.

Modelling projects anywhere from 40 to 100 millimetres of rain, which could lead to flooding. I encourage all residents to take this forecast seriously and begin preparing now for the possibility of localized flooding and road disruptions.

Heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm drainage systems, cause rivers and streams to rise, and create dangerous conditions on roads. Residents should stay informed by monitoring weather forecasts and alerts. They should avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

Now is the time to ensure your emergency kits are stocked, mobile devices are charged and household emergency plans are up to date. Those living in areas prone to flooding should take additional precautions to protect their homes and property.

Emergency management officials, municipalities and first responders are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to respond as needed. I want to thank them for their continued dedication to keeping Nova Scotians safe.
