Changes to Senior Leadership of Public Service

Premier Tim Houston announced changes to the senior leadership of the public service today, April 14.

Stephen MacDonald is joining the Province as Deputy Minister of Energy. Mr. MacDonald is a chartered professional accountant and the former president and CEO of EfficiencyOne. Under his leadership, EfficiencyOne has grown to become a leading energy efficiency organization.

“Nova Scotia is becoming an economic powerhouse. From Wind West to critical minerals, we are unleashing Nova Scotia’s untapped potential,” said Premier Houston. “I’m excited to have Mr. MacDonald join the team at the Department of Energy as we shape the future of our economy.”

Karen Gatien, the current Deputy Minister of Energy, will become Deputy Minister of Advanced Education. She retains her Executive Deputy Minister responsibilities.

Ms. Gatien takes over the portfolio from Tracey Barbrick, who continues as Deputy Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development.

The appointments take effect Wednesday, April 15.
