One Person One Record to Launch at IWK
Testing the One Person One Record system at IWK Health (IWK Health)
Patients will benefit from safer, better co-ordinated care as the One Person One Record clinical information system comes online at IWK Health on Saturday, December 6.
It will be implemented at Nova Scotia Health provincewide by the end of 2026.
Designed to securely collect, store and share health information, the system will eventually replace or connect many current systems healthcare professionals use daily to record and view patient information.
“One Person One Record is an important step to transform how our healthcare system communicates, shares information and delivers better care to Nova Scotians,” said Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness. “It will improve care by enabling healthcare providers to co-ordinate care, access real-time information, reduce errors and save time by getting rid of outdated and duplicative processes.”
IWK healthcare professionals will have access to a patient’s complete, up-to-date health information from ambulatory clinics, emergency department visits, mental health and addictions treatment and inpatient care.
This will prevent duplication and unnecessary tests and ensure timely decision making.
As the IWK completes its transition to One Person One Record, temporary staffing adjustments will support this important change. Patients and families may notice slightly longer wait times, but safe, high-quality care will be delivered throughout this period. Emergency and urgent care services will continue without interruption.
Once fully implemented, One Person One Record will bring together information from across Nova Scotia Health and IWK sites for the first time.
The system will also support referral and wait-list management across the province.
