The Bremner family of Falmouth, Hants County, is the central region and provincial winner of the 2025 Woodland Owner of the Year Award.
The family is receiving the award in memory of the late Jim Bremner, who won the regional award in 1995.
“We’re pleased to honour the memory of Jim Bremner and his dedication to responsible and sustainable forest management, which he instilled in his daughters,” said Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources. “Like many private woodlots around the province, the Bremners’ Castle Frederick Farms is a family operation that helps preserve our forests and contributes to our economy.”
The western regional winners are Judy and Glenn Rosse of South Scots Bay, Kings County, and the eastern regional winner is Brian MacEachern of St. Andrews, Antigonish County.
The awards honour private landowners for exceptional management of their woodlands and superior forestry practices on private land. They promote sustainable stewardship and raise public awareness about the significance of private woodlands in Nova Scotia.
Nominations were assessed based on integrated resource management practices, employing environmental standards, meeting sustainability goals, protection of wildlife habitats, enhancement of woodlots and understanding of forestry and woodlot management.
Quick Facts:
- the award has recognized private woodlot owners for more than 30 years
- Nova Scotians who own between 20 and 2,000 hectares of woodland are eligible to be nominated
- about 60 per cent of Nova Scotia’s woodlands are privately owned
