Community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations are building and improving recreation facilities with a $2.7-million investment from the Province.
“Community recreation spaces are where healthy habits take root – where kids learn skills, neighbours connect and people of all ages get moving,” said Dave Ritcey, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “With this investment, we’re creating safe places where kids and families can stay active.”
Thirty-two community organizations are receiving support through the Recreation Facility Development Grant program, which invests in upgrades to parks and playgrounds, trails, athletic fields and other spaces that encourage participation in sport and physical recreation.
One of this year’s projects is the Seacaps Park playground in Lockeport. Provincial support will help the town replace aging equipment and create an accessible oceanside play space for local families and visitors.
An additional 18 organizations are receiving support through the Rink Revitalization Fund. The fund helps operators of community rinks and arenas invest in core infrastructure and improvements to accessibility and energy efficiency, keeping facilities safe, welcoming and affordable.
The next application period for both programs will start in December.
