Minister’s Labour Day Message

Labour, Skills and Immigration
NOTE: The following is a statement from Nolan Young, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration.

Labour Day is a time to recognize and celebrate the people who keep Nova Scotia moving forward – the workers, employers, volunteers and community leaders whose efforts strengthen our economy and communities.

It began more than a century ago as a day to honour working people and to promote safe workplaces, fair wages and respect on the job – values that remain just as important today.

Over the past year, we’ve taken important steps to make workplaces safer, more respectful and more supportive. From workplace harassment prevention regulations to new requirements that employers and workers work together after an injury, these changes are about making sure Nova Scotians have the protections they need and the opportunities they deserve.

We’ve also strengthened supports for workers and families. The minimum wage increased this past spring, with a second increase planned for October, helping more people keep pace with the cost of living. And as of April 1, domestic violence leave was expanded to five paid days, giving people in difficult circumstances more time and security to focus on their well-being.

We’re also focused on the future of work – making sure Nova Scotians can access training and build valuable skills to find and keep meaningful employment here at home. A strong, diverse workforce is essential to a strong province, and we are committed to making Nova Scotia a place where everyone can thrive.

Labour Day is a reminder of the progress we’ve made together and the work still ahead. Let’s continue to value safe workplaces, fair treatment and opportunities for all.

I wish everyone a safe, restful and enjoyable Labour Day weekend.
