The McIntyres Mountain quarry near Kingsville, Inverness County, is expanding to support Nova Scotia’s growth, jobs and infrastructure.

The project received environmental assessment approval today, August 7.

The quarry, owned by Municipal Enterprises Ltd., supplies high-quality aggregate to help build and maintain roads in the area.

“Pits and quarries supply the essential materials behind the roads we drive on, the homes we live in and the hospitals, schools and buildings that support our communities across Nova Scotia,” said Timothy Halman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. “This approval has stringent terms and conditions to protect the environment, while allowing sustainable development to take place for the benefit of all Nova Scotians.”

Quick Facts:

  • the approval has 33 terms and conditions to protect the environment
  • aggregate, which is sourced from pits and quarries, was added to the list of the Province’s strategic minerals on May 14
  • the Department of Public Works uses 2.5 million tonnes of gravel, 750,000 tonnes of asphalt and 27,750 tonnes of sand on average per year in providing Nova Scotians safe, modern roads
