Government Approves Writeoffs for 2024-25

The provincial government is writing off $6.7 million in uncollectable debts, primarily unpaid fines, loans and fees from previous years.

“This is a standard accounting practice that government does annually,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Timothy Halman, on behalf of Finance and Treasury Board Minister John Lohr. “Although these debts are written off, efforts will continue to collect the funds owing.”

The debts are from past fiscal years up to March 31, 2024. They were written off only after a series of collection efforts and a review to establish they are unlikely to be paid.

Quick Facts:

  • the sum of uncollectable debts has been trending downward in recent years, from $12.8 million in 2022-23 and $11.6 million in 2023-24
  • this accounting process follows Nova Scotia’s Finance Act
  • uncollectable accounts do not impact the budget or the Province’s bottom line
