The only Gaelic immersion school in Nova Scotia will continue its operations with a provincial grant.

“Children aren’t afraid to learn, and these young Gaels are bravely embracing the language of their people,” said Allan MacMaster, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “While many of us haven’t taken this path, let’s support them in their journey. Gaelic is more than just a heritage language of our province; it’s a way of seeing and sharing the world with others, and it will live on through this new generation.”

Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide, a Gaelic independent school in Mabou that opened in 2021, takes a holistic approach to integrating Gaelic language and culture while exceeding academic standards in math, sciences, language arts, social studies and visual arts. The school received funding to support its ongoing operations in Gaelic language education, cultural renewal and reclamation.

Quotes:

“We are thrilled that the Province of Nova Scotia is supporting this initiative. Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide represents an approach to education that puts language and culture at the centre to promote a spirit of global citizenship that is rooted in the local community and its people. We’ve had so much generous support from our community, sponsors and donors. This provincial funding will be used to support operations, improve our place-based and culturally relevant curriculum, and support children and young families connecting with their culture. Ar mìle taing dhuibh (our thousand thanks to you)!”
Kenneth MacKenzie, Chair, Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide
