The Council of the Federation Literacy Award is marking 20 years of award winners in Nova Scotia.

The award, presented annually in each Canadian province and territory, goes to a person who has made outstanding literacy progress and has demonstrated excellence in leadership in their community, school or workplace.

This year’s Nova Scotia recipient, Mary ‘Lorenda’ Harper of Truro, returned to school after years of working in food services. Despite initial fears, she enrolled in the General Educational Development (GED) program through the Colchester Adult Learning Association and passed all five GED tests in 2023.

“It’s inspiring to see Nova Scotians take their education into their own hands, developing the skills they need to realize their potential in our growing workforce,” said Jill Balser, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration. “I’d like to congratulate this year’s award winner, Lorenda Harper, on her perseverance and commend her on her community involvement that stretches beyond academics.”

Ms. Harper, known for her active participation at the Colchester Adult Learning Association, is described by her instructors as solutions-focused, self-motivated and excited to learn, with curiosity and determination that create a positive energy in the classroom.

Ms. Harper has continued her learning journey and most recently enrolled in digital literacy courses. Beyond academics, she contributes to her community by volunteering with Girl Guides and MADD Canada.

Quotes:

“One of the proudest moments of my journey was the day I received my GED. It wasn’t just a piece of paper, it was a testament to months of hard work, determination and the support of those who believed in me. Holding that certificate in my hands, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment unlike anything I had ever experienced before.”
