Minister’s Labour Day Message
NOTE: The following is a statement from Jill Balser, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration.
As Labour Day approaches, it offers a moment to reflect on the dedication and contributions of workers across Nova Scotia. It is also an opportunity to highlight our efforts to listen to Nova Scotians and improve the workers’ compensation system to better meet the needs of our workforce.
This year marks a significant milestone: the completion of the first comprehensive review of our system in over 20 years. The Workers’ Compensation Review Committee spent the past year validating and prioritizing issues with the existing workers’ compensation system in Nova Scotia to develop recommendations in a detailed report. The committee consisted of four employee representatives, four employer representatives and an independent chair.
The report includes input from Nova Scotians across the province and outlines 10 key priorities for improving our workers’ compensation system. These priorities address critical areas, including system sustainability, prevention, timely return to work, claims administration, compensation and benefits, and the need to consider psychological health and safety.
I extend my sincere thanks to the committee and all Nova Scotians who have contributed to this work so far. Your feedback has been invaluable.
This review is just the beginning. We will analyze these recommendations and adopt a transparent, inclusive approach to modernizing and enhancing the system.
We recognize the importance of this system in supporting workers and their families, and we are committed to making meaningful improvements that will benefit our province now and for future generations.
As Nova Scotia’s workforce continues to grow and diversify, our government will continue to work hard to ensure workplaces are safe, inclusive and welcoming for all.
As we move forward, I want to assure all Nova Scotians that our commitment to enhancing the workers’ compensation system is unwavering. I look forward to sharing more details on our progress in the months ahead.
Let us acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our workforce and reaffirm our commitment to their well-being. I wish all Nova Scotians an enjoyable and restful Labour Day weekend.
