Construction has started on a new collaborative care clinic that will bring together healthcare services throughout Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM).

The Sydney River Health Centre will provide access to seven different healthcare services and programs, with capacity to support about 30,000 patient visits a year. It will open in 2025.

“Nova Scotians want healthcare they can count on from a team of connected healthcare professionals,” said Addictions and Mental Health Minister Brian Comer, MLA for Cape Breton East, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson. “This is a first-of-its-kind facility in our region, and it will improve how patients receive the healthcare they need.”

The health centre will offer new and expanded services, while other services will be relocated to the new location. Services will include:

  • Coastal Family Health, a new primary healthcare clinic staffed by six doctors, three licensed practical nurses, a dietitian and a social worker
  • Sydney Diabetes Centre
  • Palliative Care Service Cape Breton (satellite office)
  • Eastern Zone Hip & Knee Clinic (formerly Optimal Hip & Knee Clinic), which includes an orthopedic assessment clinic and prehabilitation programs to prepare patients for surgery
  • Sydney & Area Community Rehabilitation, which includes physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Nova Scotia Health Continuing Care
  • the Cape Breton Heart and Lung Wellness Centre, which includes cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs.

Once complete, the health centre will include 31 exam rooms, a gymnasium, warm-up and cool-down rooms, education rooms and administrative offices.

The Sydney River Health Centre is an example of a health home, where patients receive comprehensive care from a team of healthcare professionals that include doctors, nurse practitioners, dietitians, social workers and other healthcare professionals.

Quotes:
