Nova Scotia, Manitoba Sign Co-operation Agreement

The governments of Nova Scotia and Manitoba will co-operate to support the preservation and promotion of French language and culture in both provinces.

Colton LeBlanc, Minister of Acadian Affairs and Francophonie, and Glen Simard, Manitoba’s Minister responsible for Francophone Affairs, signed the four-year agreement on Friday, August 9, in Halifax.

“Nova Scotia is pleased to sign this new agreement with Manitoba to continue developing partnerships to support the francophone language and culture,” said Minister LeBlanc. “Francophones play a significant role in the social, cultural and economic prosperity of both provinces. This new agreement provides opportunities for Nova Scotia and Manitoba to work together on innovative ways to promote, protect and preserve the French language.”

The agreement supports the development of a bilateral action plan to identify initiatives in both provinces. The two provinces will start by sharing information on topics including French-language services, education, immigration, provincial and municipal government services, economic development, health care, tourism and culture.

Quick Facts:

  • Acadian Affairs and Francophonie is mandated to develop partnerships with Acadian and francophone agencies at provincial, national and international levels
  • this agreement is similar to the 2022 memorandum of understanding with Louisiana and the Quebec-Nova Scotia Co-operation Agreement, signed last year
  • the agreement runs until March 31, 2028
