Funding for Community Infrastructure in Cumberland County

Cumberland County residents will benefit from upgrades to community facilities with provincial grants announced today, July 18.

“Culture, recreation and other opportunities for people to come together are key ingredients for strong, healthy communities across our province,” said Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables and MLA for Cumberland South, on behalf of Allan MacMaster, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “We’re investing in these spaces to make sure all Nova Scotians have places for important activities that build our communities and enrich our lives.”

The Age of Sail Museum, located in Port Greville, is dedicated to preserving the lumber and shipbuilding history of the Parrsboro Shore. The Greville Bay Shipbuilding Museum Society, which operates the museum, received funding to restore the exterior wall of a display building, repair water damage and install a generator and an air exchange system.

The Ship’s Company Theatre, located in Parrsboro, showcases unique theatre productions and events for residents and visitors. The theatre received funding to install an elevator.

Other organizations are also receiving provincial grants for upgrades:

  • Parrsboro Band Association – install wall insulation at The Hall to reduce heating costs
  • Parrsboro and Area Lions Club – make accessibility improvements to washrooms
  • Parrsborough Shore Historical Society – replace existing asphalt shingles on the south and west side of the roof of the Ottawa House By-the-Sea Museum, which the society owns and operates.

These community grants are part of a series of announcements taking place across the province.

Quotes:

“The Parrsboro Band Association was able to insulate our 150-year-old basement and install new windows, making The Hall useable for our music programs through the winter months. On behalf of the board of directors and members at The Hall, I say a huge thank you for helping us move our venue and our programs to a new level.”
