Residents of Shelburne County can look forward to infrastructure upgrades and a recognition event for volunteer firefighters and other first responders with provincial funding announced today, May 23.

“Our government understands the critical role community organizations play in keeping each other safe, healthy and together,” said Nolan Young, MLA for Shelburne, on behalf of Allan MacMaster, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “This can be through its emergency services, public spaces and amenities provided to residents. We want to help communities continue this important work.”

The Barrington/Port La Tour Volunteer Fire Department received funding for the Shelburne County Strong Fire Relief recognition celebration to thank emergency first responders for volunteering last year during the largest wildfire in Nova Scotia’s history.

The Lower Ohio Recreation Centre received funding to upgrade the Lower Ohio ball field and install heat pumps and upgrade the electrical system in the facility.

Other community facilities to be upgraded through provincial grants include:

  • Town of Shelburne will restore the Shelburne Wharf
  • Shelburne County Arena Association will insulate the arena roof
  • West Green Harbour Recreation Association will make repairs to floors, ceilings and eavestroughs
  • Ingomar-Roseway Fire Association will replace the roof of the community hall
  • Cape Sable Historical Society will install a generator
  • Shelburne Historical Society will repair building sills, walls and doors at the Coyle House
  • Sable River Community Hall will install a commercial dishwasher.

These community grants are part of a series of announcements taking place across the province.

Quotes:

“The Lower Ohio Recreation Centre and Lower Ohio ball field have been a staple for the Ohio/Welshtown communities since the early 1900s. Both were built as a way for the communities to come together socially and recreationally, and that is still the objective today. This funding from the provincial government allows us to complete upgrades and repairs to the Lower Ohio Recreation Centre and brings us closer to completing Phase 2 of ‘Our Field of Dreams’ for the ballpark.”
Charlene Harris, President, Board of Directors, Lower Ohio Recreation Centre
