Queens County residents can look forward to improved recreation facilities and a new outdoor community pool thanks to provincial investments announced today, April 26.

“Contributing to a new outdoor pool for the community is very exciting and will play a significant role in bringing people together to be active,” said Kim Masland, Minister of Public Works and MLA for Queens, on behalf of Allan MacMaster, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “Investing in our local track and field and curling club is more good news for residents of Queens County, improving popular venues for community activity and recreational programming for years to come.”

The new pool, to be located beside the Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool, will be heated, with six lanes and suitable for competition as well as therapy and recreation.

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education has received a grant to modernize the surface of the running track at Liverpool Regional High School, which will also reduce long-term maintenance costs.

The Liverpool Curling Club will begin much-needed upgrades to its kitchen with its grant.

Community grants will continue to be announced across the province in the coming weeks.

Quotes:

“The outdoor pool project is a wonderful example of effective partnerships making a significant community impact. Council received a generous anonymous donation for an outdoor pool, and with the Province’s substantial funding combined with the municipal support, we are pleased that it will soon be a reality. Living in a municipality with over 200 kilometres of coastal shoreline and an abundance of rivers and lakes, it is essential that residents learn water safety and how to swim.”
— Darlene Norman, Mayor of the Region of Queens Municipality

Quick Facts:

  • the Region of Queens Municipality received $2.2 million for the pool
  • the South Shore Regional Centre for Education received $500,000
  • the Liverpool Curling Club received $47,030
