Significant renovations to the popular Mermaid Theatre in Windsor are coming, thanks to a provincial grant announced today, April 23.

“This grant is a testament to our government’s commitment to preserving and enhancing cultural landmarks like the Mermaid Theatre,” said Melissa Sheehy-Richard, MLA for Hants West, on behalf of Allan MacMaster, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “Such investments not only help sustain our rich cultural heritage but also stimulate local economies by enhancing tourism and creating jobs.”

The Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, founded in 1972 in Wolfville before moving to Windsor in 1987, needs significant renovations. It has received funding for a new roof, seats and electrical, heating, air conditioning and fire alarm systems.

More community grants will be announced across the province in the coming weeks.

Quotes:

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage for the prompt and generous investment in upgrading Mermaid Theatre’s facilities. The commitment to revitalize this infrastructure, on the brink of failure, ensures that our artistic programming can continue to enrich the Windsor and West Hants community and provide space and employment opportunities for artists. We will continue to seek additional support from our own municipality and stakeholders as Mermaid’s 100-year-old property is in dire need of substantial renovations. Together, we are building a vibrant future for the arts here in Nova Scotia.”
— Danny Everson, Executive Director, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia
