Sewage Management Upgrades in Colchester County

Municipal Affairs and Housing

Two communities in Colchester County will be better positioned for growth with water and wastewater improvements funded by three levels of government.

“By doubling the capacity of the Debert sewage treatment plant and upgrading essential components in Bible Hill, we're not only meeting immediate needs but also laying the groundwork for sustainable growth and development,” said Tom Taggart, MLA for Colchester North, on behalf of John Lohr, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Investing in local water and wastewater systems is not just about infrastructure; it's about safeguarding quality of life, preserving our waterways and fostering vibrant, resilient communities.”

The Debert sewage treatment plant will double its capacity with two new concrete tanks and a related building; this will enable the plant to accommodate 600 more housing units, as well as anticipated commercial and industrial developments.

The total project cost is about $5.4 million, with the Province investing more than $1.8 million, the federal government more than $2.1 million through the Green Infrastructure stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and Colchester County more than $1.4 million.

In Bible Hill, about 21 metres of deteriorated sanitary sewer pipe will be replaced, and two lift stations improved; these upgrades will help the village manage wastewater flow.

The total project cost is $440,000, with the Province investing $146,667, the federal government $176,000 through the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and the Village of Bible Hill $117,333.
