NOTE: A list of award recipients follows this news release.

The contributions of several Mi’kmaw community members were recognized during the 37th annual Treaty Day celebration today, October 1, at Province House in Halifax.

This year, three Elders and two youth from Mi’kmaw communities received awards.

“The Mi’kmaq community members receiving these awards have such a positive impact in their communities,” said Trevor Boudreau, Minister of L’nu Affairs. “It’s an honour to gather and celebrate with your family, friends and community members to recognize your hard work.”

Quotes:

“Treaty Day is a time to honour the rich history, proud culture and long-standing contributions of the Mi’kmaq. Traditions of art, music, oral histories, language and spirituality have enriched our communities and are woven into the fabric of our collective identity, regardless of our personal ancestry.”

– Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia

“It is important for us all to come together in Kjipuktuk on Treaty Day. By continuing to celebrate our treaty relationship on October 1, we all become more aware of the Mi’kmaq Nation and our history, which will improve our cultural and historical knowledge of the Mi’kmaq and build on our relationship.”

– Grand Chief Norman Sylliboy, Mi’kmaq Grand Council
