Government Approves Writeoffs for 2022-23
The Province is writing off $12.8 million in uncollectable debts from past fiscal years up to March 31, 2022.
“Debts from previous years are removed from the Province’s balance sheet when they can’t be collected. It’s a normal accounting practice that keeps the government’s financial records current,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister Allan MacMaster. “Writing off uncollectable debts has no impact on our budget or bottom line.”
The uncollectable debts are mainly unpaid fines, loans, ambulance fees and pharmacare premiums.
Debts are written off after a series of regular collection efforts and a review of the accounts receivable listings determine that they are unlikely to be paid.
Quick Facts:
- although a debt is written off, efforts to collect the funds continue
- this accounting process is in line with Nova Scotia’s Finance Act
