Nova Scotia to Host Job Fair for Newcomers

Labour, Skills and Immigration

Newcomers to Nova Scotia are invited to participate in a job fair Wednesday, July 20, at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax.

The free one-stop job fair will connect newcomers to the jobs, communities and settlement services they need to build a life in Nova Scotia.

“Connecting newcomers to the workforce is vital to their success in Nova Scotia, and we want them to explore the many opportunities that exist here in the province,” said Jill Balser, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration. “It is our hope that job-ready newcomers will secure employment, create community connections and make Nova Scotia their permanent home to lay down roots, study, work and thrive.”

The job fair will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. with exhibits from about 40 employers from different regions and industries in Nova Scotia. Representatives from the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, Nova Scotia Works, Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia, YMCA, Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Department of Community Services will also be there with information on services and supports and how to access them.

Quotes:

“Like many others across the healthcare sector, our greatest challenge is staffing, and we are grateful for the opportunity to meet new people interested in working in long-term care and seniors’ living. We have found newcomers to our province, and to our organization, to be a welcome addition to our homes and quickly establish themselves as skilled, compassionate, hard-working colleagues, and members of the greater community. We look forward to welcoming more great people to the Shannex team and to our beautiful province.”

– Catherine MacPherson, Chief Operating Officer, Shannex Inc.

“Having successfully hired approximately 10 Ukrainian nationals over the past two months, we are delighted to participate in this terrific opportunity. We have found the new associates to be great workers and truly wonderful people. We currently have an incentive available for new associates of $100 after the first month and $400 more if they are still employed at the end of November. We have assisted many of the new associates in varying ways, depending upon the specific needs of that person.”

– Glenn Bowie, General Manager, Westin Nova Scotian
