Wine Awards Call for Submissions

Up to five wines from Nova Scotian wineries will be selected for the 2019 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Excellence in Nova Scotia Wines.

The call for submissions for this year's award was announced today, March 27. The award, established by Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant in 2014, recognizes the outstanding quality of locally sourced and produced wines and honours the commitment and craft of those in Nova Scotia's wine industry.

“I have been very impressed with the high quality of the submissions that we have received in previous years,” said Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc. “I am grateful to all Nova Scotia wineries for their commitment to producing wonderful wines and for supporting the annual Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Nova Scotia Wines.”

The award is administered in conjunction with the Taste of Nova Scotia and the Winery Association of Nova Scotia. The organizations will outline the submission process and criteria to their member wineries. Each winery is invited to submit up to three commercially available wines made with 100 per cent Nova Scotian grapes. The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 10.

The wines will be judged through a blind tasting process by a panel of 12 independent wine experts in June. The winning wines will be announced at an awards ceremony at Government House in July.

The winning wines in 2018 were:

  • Avondale Sky Winery, Newport Landing, Hants Co. – Martock, 2014
  • Blomidon Estate Winery, Canning, Kings Co. – Blanc de Blancs, 2010
  • Lightfoot and Wolfville Vineyards, Wolfville – Ancienne Chardonnay, 2015
  • Lightfoot and Wolfville Vineyards, Wolfville – Blanc de Blanc Extra Brut LD, 2013
