Open Data Contest Accepting Registrations

The province and Dalhousie University are inviting students and entrepreneurs to participate in the third annual open data contest.

Participants will be challenged to spend the weekend of March 2-3 developing innovative applications, visuals or statistical models that use data from Nova Scotia’s Open Data portal.

“Open data encourages researchers and entrepreneurs to find innovative ways to use information that can benefit the social and economic prosperity of our communities,” said Internal Services Minister Patricia Arab. “I’m looking forward to seeing what this year’s participants are able to develop.”

The contest opens on International Open Data Day, March 2, and will end the following day with participants pitching their ideas to a panel of judges with the best innovations earning prizes. The contest is open to individuals and teams.

“The ability to understand, analyze and visualize with data is increasingly a core skill required for the modern workplace,” said Sandra Toze, director of the School of Information Management at Dalhousie University. “The contest brings together participants from across the province to highlight the multiple ways we can use open data to help solve complex problems and create new innovative products and services.”
