Small Farm Expo Helps Build Agriculture Sector
Experienced, new and aspiring farmers are being encouraged to Start Small and Think Big at the annual Small Farm Expo being held Monday, July 25, at the Provincial Exhibition Grounds in Bible Hill.
That is the theme for seventh annual fair where participants get the chance to experience the business of farming. They will learn traditional practices along with modern production technology, management and marketing through workshops, demonstrations and interactive sessions.
"This annual event is a great opportunity for networking and building relationships that help develop Nova Scotia's important agriculture sector," said Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell. "For the experienced farmer it's an opportunity to share trends and best practices. For the new or aspiring farmer it's a chance to see first-hand what small-scale farming is all about."
Workshops include:

- starting a value added business
- retail opportunities - farmers' market and independent grocer
- accessing capital for growth (farmers and lenders)
- relationship dynamics - how to farm without getting divorced
- running a multi-farm, community-supported agriculture operation
- production techniques and season extension
- value added hemp products
- beef and sheep genetics and selection
- what you need to know about your trees
- selection and breeding of sweet peppers
