Grants Support Seniors in Richmond County
Funding was announced today, July 20, for two organizations in Richmond County that create opportunities for seniors to be more engaged and included in their communities.
Minister of Energy Michel Samson on behalf of Leo Glavine, Minister of Seniors, announced grants from the Age-Friendly Grant program to the Dr. Kingston Memorial Community Health Centre and the Municipality of the County of Richmond.
"Making sure our communities are inclusive and accessible for everyone is a priority," said Mr. Samson. "These projects will empower seniors to participate in the development of programs and services in their communities to meet their needs."
The Dr. Kingston Memorial Community Health Centre received a $10,000 grant. It will be used to develop a model for a seniors centre in Richmond County that will make it easier for seniors to access community-based resources and provide support to help seniors stay in their communities.
"With this grant we were able to hire a project co-ordinator to develop a model that will address social determinants of health and wellness," said Lillie Spray, vice-chair of the Dr. Kingston Memorial Community Centre Health Board. "We are excited to see how this model can help improve the well-being of seniors in our community."
The second grant of $5,000 was presented to the Municipality of the County of Richmond to develop an age-friendly plan. This project will involve research, consultation and the assembly of a diverse leadership team to better understand how to create an age-friendly community.
Support from government helps these inclusive programs improve accessibility for seniors and enables them to participate more fully in their communities.
