Province Celebrates Municipal Awareness Week
Nova Scotians are invited to celebrate their communities and the people who lead them during Municipal Awareness Week from Nov. 16 to Nov. 22.
"Every Nova Scotia municipality is unique with special places, traditions and people that make our province great," said Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill. "During Municipal Awareness Week, I invite all Nova Scotians to join me in celebrating our communities, the councils that lead them, and staff who provide important services every day."
Municipal Awareness Week promotes the importance of municipal government in people's daily lives. It celebrates the dedicated mayors, wardens, councillors and public servants who are essential to the effective governance of municipalities. It also encourages public participation in council meetings, hearings, committees and elections.
"This week is a great opportunity for municipalities to raise awareness among citizens and get them more involved in their communities," said Claire Detheridge, president of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. "I encourage municipalities to offer tours of municipal facilities, give presentations at local schools, or offer other fun activities for residents."
Nova Scotia has 51 municipalities with nearly 400 elected officials.
