Take Kids to Work Day Gives Experience
Grade 9 students across Nova Scotia will gain valuable life experience as they visit workplaces today, Nov. 6, as part of Take Our Kids to Work Day.
Thousands of students from more than 100 schools are visiting Nova Scotia workplaces to job-shadow a parent, friend, relative or volunteer host on the annual work exploration.
"Take Our Kids to Work Day offers Grade 9 students a glimpse into the opportunities that await them," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey. "It gives students first-hand experience in the workplace that can help them make career decisions down the road."
In junior high and high school, students learn about career options, factors that influence career choices, and how to plan for a career. Take Our Kids to Work Day helps them explore the link between school and careers.
Nova Scotia high school students have a chance to learn more about career options in the classroom and community through programs such as co-op, Skilled Trades, Options and Opportunities and Parents as Career Coaches. These programs help students develop transferable skills such as problem-solving and a strong work ethic.
This year marks the 19th Take Our Kids to Work Day. Launched in 1994, it has been a national program since 1998.
