Premier Announces Senior Leadership Changes

Premier Stephen McNeil announced changes to government's senior leadership team, today, Oct. 23.

  • Margaret MacDonald, deputy minister of Treasury Board, becomes deputy minister of the new Department of Finance and Treasury Board
  • Laura Lee Langley, leaves as deputy minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage, to become Commissioner of the Public Service Commission
  • Liz Cody, deputy minister of Finance, becomes deputy minister of Environment
  • Kelliann Dean, Commissioner of the Public Service Commission, becomes deputy minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage
  • Kevin Malloy, deputy minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, becomes chief executive officer of Housing Nova Scotia

In addition to these changes, the following deputy ministers will be leaving the public service effective immediately:

  • Kevin McNamara, Department of Health and Wellness
  • Carole Olsen, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development
  • Sara Jane Snook, Department of Environment

"On behalf of the province, I extend my sincere thanks to the outgoing deputy ministers for their years of service and dedication to serving the public," said Premier McNeil.

Acting deputy ministers will be appointed, in the coming days, to oversee the portfolios of the departing deputy ministers until new deputy ministers are appointed.

"In the coming months, we will work with the Public Service to explore how government departments can most effectively work together to deliver services for Nova Scotians," said Premier McNeil. "These changes are part of the groundwork required to enable this to happen."

Premier McNeil praised all public servants for the work they do on behalf of Nova Scotians every day.

"I want them to know I am committed to creating conditions within the public service that will enable them to achieve their full potential and to derive maximum satisfaction from their jobs."
