NOTE: A list of this year's scholarship winners and their schools follows this release.

Twenty-two Nova Scotia students are benefitting from an industry-government scholarship program that helps them pursue careers in energy.

The Pengrowth–Nova Scotia Energy Scholarship Program is offered to post-secondary students in an energy-related field including science, engineering and business. This year, 12, $10,000 renewable scholarships were awarded to university students and 10, $2,500 non-renewable scholarships were presented to Nova Scotia Community College students.

"It is important to the province to support the education and research of Nova Scotia students," said Department of Energy deputy minister Murray Coolican. "This is a wonderful opportunity for students to be involved with the future of Nova Scotia's energy sector.

"The province is pleased to partner with Pengrowth to help Nova Scotia students build promising careers in one of the fastest growing sectors in our province."

This year's Pengrowth-Nova Scotia Energy Scholarship Program recipients were chosen based on their academic standing, community involvement and interest in the Nova Scotia energy industry.

"It is great to see students interested in working in the energy sector, and Pengrowth is happy to provide financial assistance to help these students become involved in the ever-growing Nova Scotia energy field," said Jim MacDonald, director of Pengrowth's East Operations.

Pengrowth Management Limited, Pengrowth Energy Corporation and the province have invested $3 million in the scholarship program since it began in 2005. More than 170 students have received scholarships and grants.

"It is an exciting time to be involved with the Nova Scotia energy sector and these scholarship winners have positioned themselves to play significant roles in the future of this fast-paced industry," said Mr. Coolican.

Pengrowth Management Limited was founded by Jim Kinnear in 1982. Mr. Kinnear also founded Pengrowth Energy Trust, which later became Pengrowth Energy Corporation, in 1988.
