Well-known musician and businessman Brian Doherty has been appointed Honorary Consul of Ireland with jurisdiction throughout Nova Scotia.

Members of the Consular Corps represent their country's interests while promoting mutually beneficial relationships.

"Fostering positive and productive international relationships is an important objective of this government and honorary consuls play a key role in advancing our shared interests," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "Mr. Doherty is an important figure in Nova Scotia's music and business communities. We are very fortunate to have him in this role and I look forward to working together."

"I'm delighted and humbled by my appointment as Nova Scotia's first Honorary Irish Consul and look forward to working with the province and the Irish diaspora in fostering and developing greater economic and cultural links with Ireland," said Mr. Doherty.

In recent years, Nova Scotia has increased economic links with Ireland in strategic areas including renewable energy, clean technology, digital media services, culture and financial services. Nova Scotia has also welcomed visiting dignitaries from Ireland and Nova Scotia officials have participated in missions to Ireland to advance mutual interests in immigration, air transport, tidal energy and aquaculture.

"I am delighted that Brian Doherty has been appointed as Ireland's first Honorary Consul of Ireland in Nova Scotia. The province of Nova Scotia and Ireland have enjoyed a long and close relationship and today's appointment marks a further major step in strengthening these bonds," said Ray Bassett, Ambassador of Ireland to Canada.

"I greatly look forward to working with Brian in his new post. Brian has been working for many years to build bridges between Nova Scotia and Ireland and richly deserves this new honour."

Mr. Doherty is president and owner of The Old Triangle Alehouse, president of Music Nova Scotia, the Irish Society and of Eastern Entertainment Agency Inc. He has been a member of the musical duo Evans and Doherty for 26 years.
