Minister Offers Support for Families of Missing Fishermen
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau says his thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the five Nova Scotia fishermen who are still missing after their vessel capsized in a storm on the weekend.
"As a fishermen myself, I know how dangerous it can be every time you go out on the water," said Mr. Belliveau. "I've known people that have lost their lives at sea, so I understand how extremely difficult this is for the parents and loved ones waiting to hear about their family members. Our hearts go out to those people affected."
Mr. Belliveau thanked everyone involved in the search efforts, including all the local volunteers who offered their support from the moment the five young men were reported missing.
"These are the days that fish harvesters and their families dread," said Mr. Belliveau. "It is of some comfort to see how the communities of Woods Harbour and Cape Sable Island have rallied together to support their friends and neighbours. It really shows the strength, spirit and resilience of southwest Nova Scotia."
Officials from the departments of Health and Wellness, Education and Labour and Advanced Education will be in touch with the community in the coming days with information on support programs and services available to families, friends and co-workers.
