Crown Attorney Appointed in Sydney
Stephen Melnick has been appointed a Crown attorney in the Sydney office of the Public Prosecution Service.
The appointment was announced today, Nov. 22, by Martin Herschorn, director of public prosecutions.
"Mr. Melnick's extensive background in criminal law will be an asset to the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service," said Martin Herschorn, director of Public Prosecutions. "We are very pleased to have him on board."
A native of Sydney, Mr. Melnick graduated in 1980 from the University College of Cape Breton and in 1986 from the University of New Brunswick Law School.
Mr. Melnick articled with Tobias F. MacDonald and Associates in St. John's, N.L., and later with MacIntyre MacLellan in Sydney. He became an associate with MacIntyre MacLellan in 1987 moving to Murrant Brown (later known as Walsh and Melnick) in 1990. Mr. Melnick's practice focused on civil litigation, criminal, family, corporate, commercial, real estate and immigration law.
In 1993, Mr. Melnick was appointed clinical director of the Arctic Rim Law Center Society in the Northwest Territories where he provided legal services in the Delta Region as a satellite office of the territory's Legal Services Board. In 1995 Mr. Melnick was appointed executive director of the MacKenzie Court Workers Society in the Northwest Territories providing a full range of legal services but primarily criminal law in the District of MacKenzie.
In 1997, Mr. Melnick returned to private practice in Sydney with Cusack Law. In 2001 Mr. Melnick joined Nova Scotia Legal Aid as a staff lawyer where he practised criminal law.
Mr. Melnick sits on the board of directors of the Atlantic Coastal Action Program Cape Breton, a non-profit charitable community organization.
