Nova Scotians Can Offer Input on Recreational Fishing

NOTE: A list of dates and locations for the public meetings follows this release.

Nova Scotians will help ensure fishing regulations remain relevant and effective by taking part in consultations throughout the province. Meetings to discuss sportfishing regulations and other issues begin in Sydney on Thursday, Nov. 1.

The Recreation Fishing Advisory Council meetings are held annually by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture to share sportfishing information, research, and facilitate discussion.

"Sportfishing is one of Nova Scotia's most popular outdoor activities and an important rural industry that generates about $58 million annually," said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau. "A healthy and sustainable fishery is an important contributor to the economic and social life of Nova Scotia."

Feedback from past meetings led to action to deal with invasive species. Government is developing regulations to help eliminate the spread of invasive species.

There will be six Recreational Fishing Advisory Council meetings throughout the province from Nov. 1 to 15.

Additional information on angling and meeting dates can be found at www.gov.ns.ca/fish/sportfishing or by calling 902-485-5056.
