Applications Welcomed for Agencies, Boards, Commissions

Nova Scotians interested in serving the public are encouraged to apply for the many positions available through the province's 167 agencies, boards and commissions.

Adjudicative agencies, boards and commissions serve a variety of roles and interests and have quasi-judicial functions. They review evidence, make findings of fact and law, and make decisions affecting people's liberty, security or legal rights. Members must apply legal, professional and technical principals for decisions. Examples include assistance appeal boards, Education Act board of appeal and the police review board.

Non-adjudicative agencies, boards and commissions make financial, regulatory, business or policy decisions or recommendations to government, which have far-reaching implications for Nova Scotians in many areas, from children and youth services to loan and licensing boards. Examples include the Midwifery Council of Nova Scotia, the apprenticeship board and the Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture loan board.

"It has been a delight to work with members from different walks of life and a very talented and efficient staff for the past nine years," said Roy Surette, chair, Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture Loan Board. "Together we have accomplished a great deal in terms of supporting the fishing industry in this province."

Applicants are assessed on their skills and qualifications and the needs of the individual agency, board or commission. Applications for non-adjudicative agencies, boards and commissions are welcome anytime, with assessment of applications to begin Nov.12. The application deadline for adjudicative agencies, boards and commissions is Nov. 19.

The province has an Employment Equity Policy and is committed to ensuring diversity in the workplace by supporting initiatives that promote the equitable participation of Aboriginal people, African Nova Scotians and other racially visible people, persons with disabilities and women in positions where they are under-represented. People are encouraged to self-identify on applications, covering letters or resumes.
