Colchester/Pictou Flooding Being Managed, Province Ready to Assist

Provincial Emergency Management officials are in the area and are available to provide support today, Sept. 23, after reports of flooding in Colchester and Pictou counties.

The Regional Emergency Management Organization is executing its emergency management plan. The flooding in several areas of Colchester and Pictou countes is being managed by local authorities.

"The residents of the area have been through a lot already and I really feel for all who are now dealing with flooding issues for a second time," said Truro-Bible Hill MLA Lenore Zann, on behalf of Ross Landry, Minister of Emergency Management.

"I toured the area myself at midnight and again today and provincial EMO and Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal officials have been on the ground since this morning. But I know that the local authorities have things in hand and want to reassure them that the provincial government is also ready to step in if needed."

Provincial and municipal experts will continue to gather information this week in preparation for a meeting with Premier Darrell Dexter, Ms. Zann, municipal leaders and other officials. Premier Dexter called for that meeting after the last storm to develop an action plan that protects families and businesses from flooding in central Nova Scotia.

Work to repair a berm on the North River will begin as soon as conditions are safe, which could be as early as Monday, Sept. 24.
