Premier Expresses Condolences on Passing of Dr. Ruth Goldbloom

Premier Darrell Dexter offered his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Ruth Goldbloom, who passed away today, August 29. She was 88.

Dr. Goldbloom was from New Waterford and was an avid community leader and exemplary volunteer. She co-founded the Pier 21 Society in 1990, and led efforts to establish Pier 21 as a national museum in 2010, preserving a key piece of Canadian history.

"My deepest sympathies go out to Ruth's husband Richard, family, friends and colleagues," said Premier Dexter. "Ruth was a woman of such energy, passion and commitment. She dedicated her life to enriching the lives of Nova Scotians, and her legacy will have a lasting effect on Nova Scotia and Canada. She will truly be missed."

In 1992, Dr. Goldbloom's community and national service was recognized with an appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada, and was later promoted to Officer within the Order of Canada. In 2008, she received the Order of Nova Scotia.

Dr. Goldbloom was the first female chair of the annual Metro United Way Campaign in 1989, and her leadership rallied the community behind numerous fundraising efforts, including Mount Saint Vincent University's, Futures for Women. She was awarded honorary degrees from five universities and two colleges.
