Sherbrooke Village Offers Summer Learning Camps
Songwriting, photography and painting camps, along with the Hands on History program at Sherbrooke Village Museum, will provide great learning experiences for people of all ages this summer.
"Sherbrooke Village is steeped in history and has some very picturesque grounds, so combining arts-related camps with the museum atmosphere is a win-win for students and history buffs," said Leonard Preyra, Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage.
The Road to Stanfest Songwriting Camp takes place June 25 to 28. Produced in partnership with the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, this sixth annual camp will feature Clary Croft, Sherbrooke resident and historian, Charlie A'Court, winner of the 2009 Nova Scotia Top Entertainer award, Chuck Brodsky, musical storyteller, Michael Johnson, diverse and veteran musician and vocalist-pianist Doris Mason, winner of the 2010 Women of Excellence Award.
Students participating in the camp will compete for special on-stage performance spots at Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso from June 29 to July 1.
Wally Hayes will host photography workshops at the museum July 21 and 22 and Oct. 1 to 4. Mr. Hayes has been involved with photography for over 50 years and in the last half of his career, worked with Nova Scotia Tourism to build a stunning collection of scenic images and videos of Nova Scotia. Mr. Hayes will guide participants in the basic and intermediate elements of digital photography.
Susan Paterson will lead a watercolour painting camp from Aug. 13 to 16. Ms. Paterson has exhibited her work for over 30 years in galleries across Canada and her work remains an integral part of fine art collections in Canada, United States, England and Japan. Ms. Paterson has earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Mount Allison University and has studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. She is a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour.
The Hands on History program allows participants to take a step back in time. In July and August, people of all ages can take part in a one day, two day or two night sessions and explore hands-on activities while dressed in period costume.
"We would like to recognize the support of Communities, Culture and Heritage, the Municipality of St. Mary's and Destination Eastern and Northumberland Shores for our summer camps," said Lynn Hayne, the village's manager of Development and Promotions. "Programming and instruction for the camps have also been enhanced through the support of the SOCAN Foundation and ExxonMobil."
