Commission to Prepare Revised Interim Report
The independent Electoral Boundaries Commission announced today, June 18, that the members of the commission will prepare a revised interim report and aim to complete a final report by Aug. 31.
The commission will continue to try to achieve relative voter parity in the province's electoral constituencies.
In response to the letter received from Minister of Justice Ross Landry, the commission will revise its interim report to meet the criteria of constituencies being within 25 per cent of the average number of electors, as stated in clause 2 (d) of the commission's terms of reference. This will be done while remaining sensitive to geography, community history and interests, and Nova Scotia's linguistic and cultural diversity, in particular the Acadian and African Nova Scotia population, as stated in clause 2 (c) of the terms of reference.
"It is an ambitious schedule, but the members of the commission agree that it is important to fulfill our commitment to complete the review of electoral boundaries and present our recommendations to the House of Assembly," said Teresa MacNeil, commission chair.
The Commission will present the revised interim report, with suggested electoral boundaries and a schedule for public meetings throughout the province, in the coming weeks.
