World Oceans Day to be Celebrated in Halifax

Interactive demonstrations, a live-fish tank, and educational exhibits in Halifax will help Nova Scotians celebrate World Oceans Day on Friday, June 8.

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the concept of World Oceans Day, first introduced by the government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

"Our oceans represent more than just an important source of employment for Nova Scotians," said Sterling Belliveau, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "They provide us with recreation, inspire us with beauty, and are an important part of our cultural heritage. It is our responsibility to learn about our oceans and protect them, and to be strong stewards of this valuable natural resource."

In recognition of the influence the ocean has on the social fabric of Nova Scotia and to ensure the sustainability of coastal communities, the government is finalizing a coastal strategy and developing a commercial fisheries strategy.

This year's theme is Wear Blue - Tell Two, which aims to raise awareness of Oceans Day worldwide. Oceans Day activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, 1675 Lower Water St., Halifax. Each year the event attracts more than a thousand visitors. It is free of charge, and will take place rain or shine.

June 8 is officially recognized and celebrated as World Oceans Day in about 50 countries.
