Province Announces New Glasgow School Site

Students and families in New Glasgow will soon have a new Primary-Grade 8 school on the site of New Glasgow Junior High School.

"The province is putting kids and learning first by building a school that will provide opportunities for students to be successful," said Justice Minister Ross Landry, on behalf of Education Minister Ramona Jennex. "The site of New Glasgow Junior High has been home to a school for a long time, and I am pleased that students will continue to be educated in the heart of the community."

The $18-million school will replace Temperance Street Elementary, Acadia Street Elementary, and New Glasgow Junior High School. Grade 9 students will attend North Nova High School once the Primary-Grade 8 school opens.

"It's great news that the process for building the new school can now move forward," said David Linton, chair of the New Glasgow Junior High School Advisory Committee. "The site of the current school -- and the new one -- is centrally located and well-known to residents and kids in the community. I think people are going to be very excited with this decision."

Funding for the new school is part of the province's capital investment plan that is putting millions of dollars into projects such as schools, roads, and hospitals.

For all new school construction projects that have an existing building on the site, the departments of Education and Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal examine if there are any materials or components of value for re-use, such as the foundation, floor slabs, walls and structure. Re-using materials would result in less waste and less harm to the environment.

The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board is working on an arrangement for students at New Glasgow Junior High School while the new school is being built. The school is expected to be completed in September 2014.
