Premier to Attend Southeastern United States-Canadian Provinces Alliance Conference

Premier Darrell Dexter will attend the 2012 Southeastern United States-Canadian Provinces Alliance Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (SEUS 2012) May 20-22 to spark and build international relationships, and promote the many benefits of doing business in Nova Scotia.

"Nova Scotia shares much in common with the southeastern United States, most notably a commitment to innovation across key sectors," said Premier Dexter. "This conference is an ideal opportunity to promote our province's economic strengths and look for ways to increase innovation and create and maintain good jobs in each of our regions."

Premier Dexter will also use the time to promote next year's conference, which Nova Scotia is hosting.

"I'm thrilled that these important meetings are coming to our province in 2013," Premier Dexter said. "It will give state leaders and businesses from that region the opportunity to actually see and experience Nova Scotia and all the great things we have to offer."

Representatives from eight Nova Scotia businesses will join the premier for the conference.

Those companies include B4Checkin, SheepDogInc.ca, LED Roadway Lighting, 2nd Act Innovations, Halifax Global and PoleCo, all based in Halifax, and Ideal Engineering and MacGregor's Custom Machining Ltd. of New Glasgow.

"We are headed into SEUS 2012 with a focus on identifying significant opportunities for our business," said Nick MacGregor, MacGregor's Custom Machining Ltd. "As a result of our participation in last year's conference, we know that MacGregor's is well-positioned in the marketplace to support that region's manufacturing and construction industries. We look forward to sharing our company's story and capabilities."

Both Nova Scotia and the southeastern United States are leaders in IT solutions and instrumentation to support military intelligence-gathering, naval defence and ocean-based research. The two regions also share a capacity for, and an interest in public health and biotech innovation.

Like Nova Scotia, the southeastern United States is committed to developing innovative solutions for today's energy challenges, and supporting research and development in products and services that will reduce energy costs for all.

"This is a significant opportunity for PoleCo to expand its networks and build good linkages with the region's outstanding businesses," said Sean Fleming, sales and marketing co-ordinator, PoleCo.

The Southeastern United States-Canadian Provinces Alliance works to promote trade and investment opportunities among its members, which include Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee in the United States, and Nova Scotia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Quebec in Canada.

Nova Scotia exports more than $550 million annually in goods to the southeastern United States, including tires, gypsum, forestry products, seafood and aerospace technology.
