Premier Expresses Condolences on Passing of Dr. Elwood
Premier Darrell Dexter offered his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Marie Elwood, who passed away Sunday, March 25.
Dr. Elwood was one of the first recipients of the Order of Nova Scotia, in 2002, and served as Chief Curator of History at the Nova Scotia Museum from 1973 until 1992.
"My deepest sympathies go out to Dr. Elwood's family, friends and colleagues," said Premier Dexter. "This was a woman who made an extraordinary contribution to this province, drawing Nova Scotians into a better understanding and appreciation of our cultural history."
Dr. Elwood was a fixture at Government House for years as she catalogued and advised on its historic contents. Her contributions also included efforts to locate and return numerous cultural artifacts, paintings and documents to Nova Scotia and Canada.
Known internationally as an expert on ceramics, Dr. Elwood pioneered the teaching of ceramics history at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 1987, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of King's College and in 1982, was elected a fellow of the Royal Arts Society in London, England.
