Nominations Open for Council of Federation Literacy Award

People can recognize outstanding Nova Scotians for their contributions to literacy and learning by nominating them for a Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

Each year, Canada's premiers present one adult learner in each province and territory with an award for their progress in learning and leadership within their community, workplace or school. The award also recognizes the role literacy plays in the social and economic health of Canadians.

"Literacy and essential skills are the stepping stones to better job prospects and economic well-being for Nova Scotians and their families," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "With a more literate workforce, Nova Scotia is better able to compete in the global economy."

Award winners are selected by a committee of business, community and education organizations.

"Past winners stand out because of how hard they've worked and for the obstacles that they've overcome to gain literacy skills," said Marilyn More, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education. "I encourage Nova Scotians to nominate a deserving learner whose commitment to literacy moves others to embrace lifelong learning."

Winners will be presented with a medallion and a certificate of merit by the premier at a ceremony in the fall.
