Extension Granted for Independent Investigation
The independent investigation into the arrest and detention of Victoria Rose Paul will be extended by three months.
Independent investigator Nadine Cooper Mont asked for, and has received, an extension to June 1, to complete her report.
"I am focused on providing the most thorough possible investigation," said Ms. Cooper Mont. "I understand the need to complete this report in a timely fashion. However, I also need to be satisfied that no stone was left unturned."
Ms. Paul was arrested on Aug. 28, 2009. While in the custody of Truro Police Service, she suffered a massive stroke and was transferred to hospital on Aug. 29. The 44-year-old woman died Sept. 5, 2009 in a Halifax hospital.
Ms. Cooper Mont is investigating how Truro Police Service handled the incident, and is reviewing the subsequent investigation by Halifax Regional Police.
"I want to continue to express my sympathy to the family and friends of Ms. Paul," said Justice Minister Ross Landry. "I also want to thank all involved for their patience as this important independent investigation is completed."
Mr. Landry announced the investigation Aug. 25, 2011. It was expected to last six months.
