Nova Scotia Scores World-Class Golf Event
Glen Arbour Golf Course is hosting the TELUS World Skins Game, July 29 to 31, 2012.
The prestigious golf event selected Halifax and Nova Scotia as winner of the competitive bid process to host the 20th anniversary celebration.
"The TELUS World Skins Game is an excellent opportunity to showcase Nova Scotia on the world stage," said Percy Paris, Minister, Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. "Major events such as these help to attract visitors to our province, build Nova Scotia's tourism industry and grow our economy."
The province will provide $200,000 to support the event.
A highlight of Canada's summer sporting schedule, the TELUS World Skins Game is expected to attract 10,000 people over two days. Economic activity is projected to be about $3 million throughout the province, which includes about $1.5 million of new money to the Nova Scotia economy.
The expertise of Events Nova Scotia helped Glen Arbour's successful bid.
"Nova Scotia has proven time and time again that we are a world-class event host," said Scott Ferguson, president and CEO of Trade Centre Limited, which leads Events Nova Scotia. "We are pleased that we could help Glen Arbour win this bid. It is an excellent example of how working together in partnership we can grow the event economy."
Devil's Pulpit Golf Club in Caledon, Ont., hosted the first Skins Game in 1993. Some of the biggest names in professional golf; including Jack Nicklaus, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Mike Weir and Greg Norman, have played at Canada's top golf destinations over the event's 19-year history.
Glen Arbour Golf course is one of Atlantic Canada's premiere golf destinations. The Annapolis Group Inc., owned and operated club has hosted a number of prestigious golf events including the inaugural Wayne Gretzky and Friends Invitational in 1999 and the BMO Canadian Ladies Open in 2005.
