Premier Re-Affirms Commitment to Help Find Solution for Bowater Mersey
Premier Darrell Dexter, today, Nov 17, re-affirmed his commitment to work with all key players to help find viable solutions to keep the Bowater Mersey mill in operation.
Employees of the mill voted 104-97 to accept concessions from the company in an effort to try to keep the mill operating.
"Employees of the mill were forced to make one of the toughest decisions of their lives," said Premier Dexter. "I want the employees and their families to know that the province appreciates how difficult a decision this was for them and that we will do all we can to support them as we work together to map out next steps."
Premier Dexter said that more than 2,000 families in Liverpool and surrounding communities depend on the mill for their livelihood. The province will continue to work with all parties to identify solutions that would see the mill operate in the future.
"When I came to Liverpool a few weeks ago, I said that there was a lot of work to do in order to save the mill," said Premier Dexter. "While the workers have done their part and the province is committed to doing the same, all parties must continue to work with one another, side by side, to make the tough choices and decisions now that will see a successful mill operating in Liverpool for years to come."
