Workshops Focus on Fall Food Flavours

Nova Scotians hungry to learn about using local, seasonal ingredients in everyday meals can attend upcoming workshops.

Workshops will feature a local chef preparing a meal made with local fall flavours, health and nutrition information, food safety tips, a food plating demonstration and a presentation by a local producer.

The first workshop takes place Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Atlantic Superstore in Kingston, Kings Co., from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. More workshops will be offered in communities throughout Nova Scotia this fall.

"Nova Scotia's farms provide a variety of foods every day of the year. There is always something delicious and nutritious in season and ready for the table," said John MacDonell, Minister of Agriculture. "These workshops will help Nova Scotia consumers learn about where their food comes from, how to source local food and how to prepare it for their families."

The workshops are sponsored by the Department of Agriculture and Loblaws.

"When Nova Scotia consumers use local products, it helps support farmers, creates good jobs and grows the economy," said Mr. MacDonell.

The Department of Agriculture supports buying local year-round by administering the Select Nova Scotia campaign. Select Nova Scotia was developed to create partnerships with food producers, processors, retailers, food service and consumers and to promote the sale and consumption of Nova Scotia grown and produced food.
