Event Hosting Supports Nova Scotia's Economic Growth
Hosting a variety of events from a hit Broadway show to an international culinary conference, Trade Centre Limited continues to strengthen Nova Scotia's economy and contribute to the province's cultural vibrancy.
TCL released its annual report today, Oct. 5, for the period April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011. The report highlights the impact of major events, meetings and conventions on Nova Scotia communities.
"Attracting and hosting major events, meetings and conventions fuels our provincial economy," said Percy Paris, Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. "These activities generate thousands of jobs, create new opportunities for partnerships and support business development from one end of the province to the other."
In 2010-11, TCL facilities hosted 793 events that attracted 623,898 people. TCL revenues for the year were $13.9 million, with an operating loss, before depreciation, of $130,748.
"The events we attract deliver a range of economic, social and cultural benefits to Nova Scotia," said Scott Ferguson, president and CEO of TCL. "Our approach continues to evolve beyond the facilities we operate to focus on strong, committed partnerships that will drive growth and position Nova Scotia as Canada's East Coast events destination."
Total spending by event planners and delegates in Nova Scotia was $72.2 million. Of this, $46 million was new money to our economy which generated 1,211 person years of employment and $4.2 million in provincial tax revenues.
