Prepare for Heavy Rain, Storm Surges

The Emergency Management Office is warning Nova Scotians along the Northumberland Strait and other northern coastal areas of storm surges overnight on Wednesday, Oct. 5 and Thursday morning, Oct. 6.

Environment Canada has advised Nova Scotians to expect higher than normal water levels due to storm surge, high waves and pounding surf, Wednesday evening, especially on coastlines exposed to the north in Cape Breton and the eastern coast of Antigonish County.

Rain already falling in Southwestern Nova Scotia today, Tuesday, Oct. 4, will increase overnight with 50 to 100 millimetres expected over two days. Most of Nova Scotia will be affected. Northerly winds gusting to 100 km/h are forecast along the Northumberland Strait and Cape Breton.

Justice Minister Ross Landry, the Minister responsible for EMO, is encouraging people near northern coastal areas to do everything they can to protect their property and themselves.

"If you live along those coastlines and have experienced surges and flooding in the past, it would be wise to ensure that loose items are secured and to prepare for possible localized flooding."
