Nova Scotians Should Prepare for Heavy Rain

The Emergency Management Office is reminding Nova Scotians to be aware of heavy rainfall and potential flooding that could affect a number of areas today, Oct. 1, and Sunday.

The heavy rains are products of two weather systems, a major land-based depression already moving slowly through the Maritimes, and the broad reach of Hurricane Ophelia. The most likely track for Ophelia will keep its centre well offshore, but it will likely bring more heavy rain to Nova Scotia.

Environment Canada has expanded its heavy rain forecasts to include more of central Nova Scotia, from the Shelburne area north-east beyond Truro as well as southeastern regions of the mainland and Cape Breton.

EMO advises people living in areas vulnerable to flooding to remain alert and check local forecasts. There is also potential for road washouts and driving hazards, especially at new road constructions.

Detailed information on preparations for heavy rain and other severe weather threats can be found on the EMO website, at www.gov.ns.ca/emo .
